Keith Dixon and Anne Elliott have travelled together on an annual holiday to southern Africa for the past nine years - for Keith, many, many more years prior to that.
OUR 2006 SAFARI here
Last year we decided to share our holiday with you. In saying that, those of you who visited our site would have noticed that it is not a detailed travelogue of every country, city and town we visited - you should go into a specific website for that sort of information.
What we tried to do is give you information on the accommodation we stayed in, and some of the restaurants we dined in, in the hope that it wouldl assist you in your travel plans. The reason for this was that many websites you look at and travel books you read are not up-to-date and, in some cases, the information contained is completely incorrect.
OUR 2007 SAFARI
Following the great feedback from our 'Legend Safari Tour 2006' site it is with great pleasure I bring you information on the mid-range accommodation and dining establishments we found during our 2007 three month safari through Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as other helpful hints for those of you who are planning a self-drive tour of that great continent. In a lot of cases we stayed at the same accommodation as last year - once you find a good place, then why change!
Once again I stress that the establishments mentioned are not necessarily recommendations, they are just places we found which, in most cases, were very pleasant and affordable. You can judge for yourselves by my comments whether or not you would like to stay, or dine, in them!
The prices quoted were what we paid at the time and could have changed by now, as could some of the services mentioned.
This year I decided to give you the information under the name of the towns/game parks in which we stayed, rather than the day-by-day format
of last year.Enjoy! In case you would like to refer to last year's tour just click here or the 'safari 2006' button on your left.
THE START
June 5: Leaving drought-stricken Narromine in central west New South Wales we headed off on the six hour drive to Sydney where we once again stayed at the Ibis Hotel which cost $109/double, excluding breakfast, when booked online - very reasonable considering its high standard and the price you can pay at other hotels in the area.
The next day, a quick journey on the shuttle and we were at Sydney International airport (where we made the mistake of having a breakfast snack at an exhorbitant price) to board the 10:00am Qantas flight to Johannesburg.
Tip: Security is very strict at Sydney airport so make sure you undertand the new procedures. Especially the rules concerning the carrying of liquids in hand luggage. Containers must be only 100ml capacity and must be carried in a resealable plastic bag. If you have, say, 100ml of liquid in a larger container, say 200ml, it will be confiscated.
Fourteen hours later we touched down at Johannesburg and made our way to the shuttle bus area for our short trip to the Garden Court hotel. The tarrif at R875/double,excluding breakfast, is a lot higher than last year, and was even higher (R990) when we stayed there three months later prior to our return home. That, on top of the cost of breakfast and the shuttle (R28 each per trip) makes it a very expensive stay. It was good to see that prices at McGinty's Pub and Restaurant haven't changed much.
Tip: To find your way to the shuttle area you must traverse through the ground floor of the Intercontinental Hotel to the designated spot. A huge amount of construction work is being carried out which makes it difficult to find your way around.
June 7: Feeling decidedly jetlagged we caught the British Airways (Comair) flight to Windhoek where our three month holiday finally started.
Tip:
Remember that when you fly from Johannesburg to Namibia (a SADC partner) you cannot purchase duty free items such as alcohol, perfume etc.
